What to expect from your German translation

The main thing to keep in mind when you are translating from English to German is that the length of the content is likely to increase by about 20-30%, due to German words typically being longer.

Let’s review a comparison below to give you a better idea.

English: At The Language Factory, we specialise in providing business translation services of the highest quality.  We have the ability to translate into over 140 different languages, covering nearly every corner of the globe.

German: The Language Factory ist auf Übersetzungen für Unternehmenskunden spezialisiert, die höchsten Qualitätsansprüchen gerecht werden. Wir sind in der Lage, Übersetzungen in mehr als 140 verschiedene Sprachen zu bieten, die es Ihnen ermöglichen, sich praktisch überall auf der Welt verständlich zu machen.

The English word count is 33 and the German is 41: a percentage increase of 24%. This is definitely something to keep in mind from a design perspective.

Interesting facts about the German language

  • The German language has four noun case endings.
  • In German grammar, everything has one of three genders: masculine, feminine or neuter. In its simplest grammatical case, nominative, the words for ‘the’ are ‘der’ for masculine nouns, ‘die’ for feminine nouns and ‘das’ for neuter nouns, e.g der Hund (dog), die Katze (cat) and das Kaninchen (rabbit).
  • German tends to string words together to form new words! It is able to do this because its grammar allows you to create compound nouns, whereas other languages would need the words to be separate. A good example of this in German is the word Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänswitwe, which literally translates in English to the following 8 separate words:

widow of a Danube steamboat company captain
